Netopti Dynamic (for ADSL customers)
NetOpti International is an intelligent web acceleration
technology that reduces international Internet bandwidth usage while increasing
performance and reliability.
Most popular web sites in
NetOpti International delivers the following benefits
to sites like these:
It
can save from 50% to 90% of international bandwidth used, reducing costs
significantly.
It
brings down response times and increases transfer speeds significantly,
especially on large graphical and media content. Sites will be as fast to access from abroad
as any other major international site.
NetOpti
can serve as a failover mechanism to display a backup version of a site in case
there are any disruptions to the service, for example if the server fails or
during a disruption in local or international network connectivity.
This technology will result in significant savings in
certain applications. Sites that will
draw the most benefit out of it are the following:
Certain sites
can not be run on servers located in data centres in
Servers like
these are often located on premises and connected to the Internet via a leased
line. International bandwidth over
leased lines is costly since it reflects the high costs ISP’s has to pay for
international links through Telkom.
The design of
many sites only allows for a single primary site, even with load balancing, all
relevant web sites have to be in the same physical location. This is a problem when the sites get accessed
from many different locations around the world and it’s not possible to run
multiple mirrors.
Sometimes
when mirroring is possible, a different address has to be entered by the user
for each mirror, or a main site has to redirect a user to an appropriate
mirror. These issues can result in a
negative experience of the speed or browsability of the site. NetOpti route based DNS servers can make
accessing mirrors completely transparent to the user.
In the following two situations NetOpti will provide
performance gains, but not as much of a cost saving at the same time:
Some ISP’s
have spare capacity for outgoing traffic over their international links. This is because they acquire an equal amount
of incoming international bandwidth as outgoing international bandwidth. The majority of ISP customers download from
sites overseas instead of sending data abroad, leaving spare outgoing capacity.
These ISP’s
offer hosting in their data centres where they charge out international
bandwidth at a significantly reduced rate since they have bandwidth to spare,
it is also sometimes fairly complex to be able to measure and bill each
customer with a differentiation between the local and international component
of usage.
In this
situation NetOpti International will still save a significant amount of
bandwidth and increase performance, but it will not result in a direct cost
saving except to the ISP.
However, in
the situation of a really busy site, the ISP’s can not provide outgoing
bandwidth at a reduced cost, and will have to charge appropriately, this is
where NetOpti International can be of benefit.
Sites that
can easily be transported off site, especially with static content that doesn’t
get updated often, can easily be hosted on servers abroad where the costs are
significantly lower.
In the case
of mirroring, NetOpti can still make accessing the individual mirrors according
to his location fast and completely transparent to the user.
If the site
still gets a lot of hits from browsers located in
For sites drawing a lot of hits from browsers abroad,
intelligent caching servers are distributed globally in order to serve pages to
these customers faster while reducing bandwidth overheads significantly.
This is achieved by the following components:
DNS servers will automatically direct browsers to the
appropriate web or cache server. If a
browser requests the web site’s address from within
Requests from
web browsers abroad will be sent to these servers; in turn they will fetch data
from the primary web site in
This means
that when several browsers from outside of
Many sites
have large amounts of dynamic content, often generated by server side scripting
like ASP. Information like this cannot
be cached since it changes constantly.
In order to save bandwidth on transferring data like this, compression
is applied when pages are being transferred abroad.
NetOpti local is an intelligent web acceleration
solution for companies with web sites located abroad wanting to increase
performance for visitors from
Some companies prefer to run their sites on servers
located in data centres abroad since these sites are accessed mostly from users
located in the US, Europe or Asia.
Overseas hosting is also significantly cheaper than hosting at ISP data
centres in
Often these sites are still accessed by a lot of
browsers based in
NetOpti local provides a transparent local cache for
sites like these, so that it will respond to the browser as fast as if it was
being accessed from a browser abroad.
This solution will result in performance gains for
companies with sites hosted outside of
NetOpti Local works similar to NetOpti International,
except that it uses intelligent cache servers in
NetOpti Dynamic is a solution for companies who wish
to host their web server on-site over ADSL.
This enables sites to deliver content at a speed similar to hosting at a
major data centre as well as reducing bandwidth usage significantly, which will
allow the site to operate within monthly transfer limitations.
Telkom’s new ADSL offering allows many company
affordable leased connectivity to the Internet.
However, these links are only capable of transmitting data out at half
the speed as it is downloading, and is limited to only 3 Gigabytes of
International traffic per month. Users
are also assigned a dynamic IP address, which changes daily.
These limitations put serious constraints on the
performance, accessibility and reliability of ADSL if used for hosting publicly
accessible web servers.
NetOpti provides a transparent solution for customers
like these, addressing all the following issues:
Intelligent caching servers keep a copy data that has
already been transferred over the ADSL link in order to prevent it from being
downloaded again when other users are accessing it. This means that content gets served to the
connecting browsers by the cache servers directly most of the time at a much
higher throughput rate as the ADSL can provide.
Since only updated data gets transmitted, on mostly
static sites this can save up to 10 times the monthly International throughput,
which means instead of a 3 Gigabyte limit this can allow up to 30 Gigabytes of
data transferred per month. If this is
not enough, all international traffic can be routed through the NetOpti
network, meaning that only local bandwidth will be used over the ADSL, preventing
it from hitting the 3 Gigabyte limit completely.
Since the NetOpti servers keep data off-site, when
there is a failure a backup copy of the information can get displayed to the
connecting browsers. Performance of a
web site is also not that sensitive to the link being congested, especially if
it used for company e-mail and internal web access at the same time.
Most importantly, the NetOpti servers will keep track
of the dynamically changing IP address, so that there is absolutely no downtime
when the router is assigned a new address daily.
NetOpti Dynamic is for companies who are taking
advantage of ADSL connectivity while wanting to host their web servers on-site,
cheaply and reliably.
NetOpti Dynamic works similarly to NetOpti
International, except that it also employs an intelligent caching server in
